According to Eurofer, the fuel economy benefits of cars made from lightweight materials will not compensate for the environmental damage caused by the production of the materials used, even after driving at least 200,000 km. In its final presentation, Eurofer says that the lighter the material, the more expensive it is to manufacture and the more harmful to the environment.
Eurofer emphasizes that steel is not only much cheaper than aluminum in terms of cost and processing, but also in terms of environmental impact. The production of a ton of steel from iron ore produces 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The production of a ton of primary aluminum - 10 tons of carbon dioxide, and the production of a ton of carbon fiber - up to 20 tons of carbon dioxide.
The automotive industry is one of their most important customers, which is why new grades of steel with high strength are developed for them, thanks to which weight reduction can be achieved.
Replacing steel in the automotive industry will not reduce the environmental burden - Eurofer
