MMK ensures the production of new rolled metal products for shipbuilding

The Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant is constantly working on the development of a new brand assortment, mastering a new technology for the production of rolled metal from new steel grades for the manufacture of structural parts for nuclear icebreakers and ice-class ships.

Plate mill 5000 produces highly profitable rolled products up to 4850 mm wide for the oil and gas industry, bridge building, shipbuilding and machine building. The volume of investments in the implementation of this project amounted to $ 1.5 billion. The mill is capable of producing 1.5 million tons of five-meter thick plate per year, this is one of the largest productions in the world. The products of Magnitogorsk Mill 5000 are import-substituting products.

OJSC MMK has developed a unique technology for smelting, finishing and casting slabs at the new continuous casting machine, which allows to ensure high purity of steel due to the newly introduced ladle furnace and vacuum unit, as well as through the use of soft reduction at the continuous casting machine. Rolling technology in Mill 5000 includes specially selected slab heating, temperature-deformation regime and accelerated cooling strategy in a controlled cooling unit. The large-format sheet produced using this technology of controlled rolling fully meets the requirements of the consumer both in terms of mechanical characteristics and technological characteristics, including the formability and weldability of steel.

The development of innovative technologies for the production of ship steel grades is carried out by OJSC MMK specialists with the involvement of research institutes, which ensures high efficiency and effectiveness in meeting the requirements and needs of shipbuilders.

MMK is mastering new technologies for the production of cold-resistant steel of increased and high strength, which has improved weldability for marine equipment, for drilling platforms and facilities operating in the Far North. As part of expanding the range of products it produces, MMK is mastering the technology for the production of Arc-indexed steels.
