IndustriALL is organizing a demonstration on 9 November to bring 10,000 steel workers across Europe to the streets.
The association has nearly 7 million members and is committed to countering the shrinking steel industry in the European Union. IndustriALL recalls that before the crisis, more than 400,000 people were employed in European industry. Currently, this figure has fallen to the lowest level in history - 330 thousand.
According to IndustriALL, inappropriate austerity policies in Europe resulted in stifling growth and curbing investment in infrastructure, as well as lack of investment in R&D, modernization and aggressive dumping exacerbated the situation. The steel industry needs more support, being the backbone of high tech industries such as automotive, electronics and renewable energy.
The demonstration should support the steel industry's aspirations to combat dumping and improve the effectiveness of market protection. IndustriALL also reminds that an emissions trading system must support not only the environment, but also jobs. The demonstrators also demand not to reduce the European production capacity, but to modernize.
