Steel demand in Russia is projected to resume growth in 2017. Apparent steel consumption is expected to increase by 2 percent year on year to 39.1 million tonnes, based on a modest increase in gross domestic product (GDP) next year.
Steel demand in Russia has been declining for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016, but steel demand should return to growth in 2017, driven by increased consumption of construction and automotive steels.
At the same time, the demand for structural steel will increase by 2.4 percent, as the demand for steel in the automotive sector will increase by more than 2.2 percent.
