The rules determine the norms for harmful emissions into the atmosphere from industrial enterprises, transport, power plants and agriculture. National commitment to this issue will cover the post-2020 period, but will also set targets for the post-2030 period.
The new regulations include a commitment by countries to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC), ammonia and fine particles (less than 2.5 microns in diameter). Methane was removed from the directive, as a reduction in methane emissions may indicate a need to reduce livestock numbers and threaten agricultural production.
MEPs reaffirmed the EU's commitment to defining norms and changing the poor current legislation on vehicle emissions. With the adoption of these provisions, air quality will gradually improve.
