The US turned to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as Beijing artificially increases its global market share using cheap government loans and energy subsidies.
The complaint says the actions of China's aluminum industry violate WTO rules, causing "serious harm" to other members of the organization, the US Foreign Trade Agency said. The complaint alleges that cheap government loans, coal, electricity and raw materials are undermining global prices and increasing China's market share.
China more than quadrupled its aluminum production capacity between 2007 and 2015. At the same time, global metal prices fell 46 percent. China currently produces more than half of the world's aluminum.
