US President Barack Obama ordered the transfer of the armored brigade to Poland. At the same time, a battalion of US NATO forces will be deployed on the border with Kaliningrad in northeastern Poland.
Last week, the unloading of equipment from an armored brigade of a US military battle group began in the German port of Bremerhaven. American soldiers began to arrive in Poland as part of Operation Resolve. On Thursday, a convoy of American soldiers marching to Zagan left Germany and crossed the Polish border. A US contingent and a tank brigade passed the Olshin border crossing east of Cottbus. An advance detachment will proceed in the coming days, including 87 Abrams tanks and 500 heavily armed transporters. Approximately 2,000 vehicles and freight containers are transported mainly by rail.
This is one of the largest US military redeployments in Europe since the end of the Cold War, going from Germany to Poland. In accordance with the decisions of the NATO summit, the American brigade will strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank. On the Polish side, ABCT elements will go to other locations in Central and Eastern Europe. Russia has criticized the deployment of US troops on the western border as a "threat."
More than 3,000 military personnel were decided in 2014 to send to Poland and the Eastern European NATO countries - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. The decision to support the national armed forces in these countries was made in 2014 after the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia. “NATO countries want to demonstrate that its members will respond to threats from Russia,” derstandard notes.
