The latest statistics indicate that the global market for refined zinc was in deficit of 263,000 tonnes during the eleven months of 2016. The total number of registered zinc reserves decreased by 72,000 tons during this period. Refined zinc production for eleven months totaled 12.532 million tonnes, in line with the previous year.
Zinc mine output has dropped significantly in major producing countries including Australia, India, Ireland and Peru. Overall, compared to the corresponding period a year earlier, zinc mine production decreased by 1.2% in eleven months of 2016. This is despite the dramatic increase in output from mines in China.
Global demand for refined zinc increased slightly to 12.795 million tonnes in January-November last year, up from 12.358 million tonnes in the same period last year. Zinc use in China rose sharply by 8.8% over this period. European demand remained unchanged during this period. However, the increase in Chinese use offset the 12.7% decline in US use.
