On January 17, 2017, PJSC Zaporizhstal held public hearings in the city of Zaporozhye on the project “Reconstruction of steelmaking production, with the construction of a complex for the production of hot-rolled coils as part of a converter department, a department of casting and rolling modules and auxiliary productions”.
The public hearings in the format of an open dialogue were attended by representatives of regional and city authorities, environmental experts of Ukraine, representatives of science, the public of Zaporozhye. Public hearings were held in the format of an open dialogue: in addition to the speeches of official representatives from the plant and the regional authorities on the implementation of the project, residents of Zaporozhye received answers to questions regarding the timing of the project, environmental impact assessment, and the closure of the outdated open-hearth production of the enterprise.
At the end of December 2016, the All-Ukrainian Ecological League (chairman T. Timochko) initiated and organized a round table on the project for the reconstruction of the steelmaking production of PJSC "Zaporizhstal". Within the framework of the round table, the project was comprehensively analyzed by experts and received a positive assessment from environmentalists. The experts' comments were taken into account in the draft.
“The construction of a modern converter shop is an important project, with the implementation of which we will achieve a comprehensive effect: we will modernize the plant and bring it to European standards, reduce the load on the region, and attract multimillion-dollar investments, we will make a breakthrough in the economic development of the city. And we sincerely believe that this project can be successfully implemented only by discussing it in an open dialogue, with the participation of the public and highly qualified experts, as it happens today, "said Rostislav Shurma, General Director of Zaporizhstal PJSC.
To date, Zaporizhstal PJSC has allocated about UAH 500 million of its own funds to the design work for the oxygen-converter shop. The plant has attracted the world's best practices - the world's leading manufacturers - Primetals and SMS Siemag. The design documentation was prepared by the leading Ukrainian institutes "UkrGipromez" and "Energostal".
“The project is important for the city in all aspects - both ecologically and economically. Now work is underway to improve the project - and this is a positive example of interaction between the business and the public to achieve a common goal. The holding of public hearings by the plant is a step towards an open civilized dialogue, a positive precedent, which must be equal to all enterprises, "- said the head of the Zaporozhye regional organization of the All-Ukrainian Ecological League Iryna Pirogova.
