The Philippines has revoked permits for several mining projects. This applies to four mines, including the ban on Norway's Intex Resources project to develop a nickel mine in the Central Philippines on Mindoro Island. The planned total investment is US $ 2.5 billion.
Philippines Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Regina López said at a press conference that the project should be built on a watershed that would undermine the environmental ecosystem.
Earlier, more than 5,000 residents, including environmental groups, indigenous peoples, local government and business leaders, pledged not to allow Norwegian mining company Intex Resources to start large-scale mining on the island.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte supports Lope's moves towards the mining industry. The president, after taking office last June, immediately announced that the Philippines could survive without the presence of the mining industry.
