China's northern province of Hebei has pledged to continue to cut steel and iron production capacity in 2017 in an attempt to counter the severe smog that plagues the province's residents.
The provincial lieutenant governor has unveiled a wave of measures for 2017 to tackle smog, including a 15.62 million tonne cut in steel capacity.
The province has faced severe air pollution in recent years, especially PM2.5 particles, which are considered particularly hazardous to human health. The province issued a total of three red alerts in 2016 - the highest alert in the three-tier early warning system and four less severe orange alerts. Six of the ten worst cities in the country in terms of air pollution are in Hebei Province.
Therefore, from 2013 to 2017, the province is implementing projects aimed at reducing 60 million tons of steel and 40 million tons of coal consumption.
