Guizhou Province, one of the main coal suppliers in southwest China, plans to close 120 coal mines and cut coal capacity by 15 million tonnes in 2017, responding to the nation's challenge to tackle the sector's overproduction.
“Although the coal industry contributes 15 percent of the province’s GDP, the government has decided to cut inefficient and obsolete capacity, promoting industrial and health restructuring,” said Zhang Yingwei, director of the Guizhou Provincial Power Bureau.
Guizhou surpassed its 2016 coal capacity cut target by 11 percent through mergers and reorganizations of coal companies. China will continue to reduce overcapacity in the coal and steel industries through zombie plant closures and mergers. In Guizhou Province, not a single worker has lost their jobs, some have been transferred to new meta after retraining, and some have received early retirement.
