United States Steel Corporation, the current owner of the largest Slovak steel mill in Kosice, signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Chinese company Hesteel Group. According to Slovak media, this will lead to a change in the ownership of the steel production.
The fact that US Steel wants to get rid of the Slovakia plant has been debated for several years. At stake, among other things, are energy costs and environmental regulations.
It is currently known that the Hesteel Group has the opportunity to pay about 1.4 billion euros for the plant. According to experts, approximately $ 1 billion will need to be invested by the new owner in some departments to compete more effectively with other European steel mills.
Hesteel recently bought the Smederevo plant from the Serbian government. The Chinese company paid 46 million euros for it. It is noteworthy that this facility was also previously owned by US Steel, but was "returned" to the government.
