Moon Express, the first US private space exploration firm to receive government approval to go beyond Earth's orbit for a trip to the moon, scheduled for late 2017.
Fresh funds will allow Moon Express to solve unexpected problems associated with landing a spacecraft on Earth's only natural satellite. The funds they use for their missions must come almost entirely from private sources.
If the mission proves successful, the company will become the first private venture to also set the stage for a number of other non-profit space projects. These include plans to extract minerals from asteroids, track space debris, the first human settlements on Mars, and billionaire Elon Musk's own plan for an unmanned mission to the Red Planet in 2018.
