Liege, Belgium. The King of Belgium has officially opened a new € 63 million production line at ArcelorMittal Kessales Belgium. The new galvanizing technology is the culmination of years of research and development carried out by the ArcelorMittal and CRM research teams to achieve a breakthrough in the galvanizing process.
The invention continues the Wallonian tradition of improving steel coatings. The first galvanizing line was commissioned in 1881. The installation is part of an ambitious investment program launched in 2013. The total cost of the investment program will reach 138 million euros.
The world's first JVD vacuum coating line is funded by a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Sogepa. JVD technology will be used to produce coated steel for the automotive and other industrial applications as it has many advantages:
- Leads to lower environmental impact, ensuring low energy consumption.
- Creates an extremely uniform coating that improves surface quality and facilitates welding in post-processing.
- It provides excellent coating adhesion, regardless of the steel quality, even for new ultra high strength steels.
- Eliminates the risk of oxidation of steel or zinc, as the line operates at low pressure, and therefore at lower temperatures.
- It is a very flexible process due to its ability to easily adjust coating weight and accept various steel substrates, regardless of their chemical composition.
