Frank-Walter Steinmeier has long remained in the shadow of his political mentor, Gerhard Schroeder. A turning point in his career was in 2005 the post of Foreign Minister. The most popular German politician was elected president on Sunday.
The winner, Steinmeier, surrounded by the party leaders, was immediately bombarded with bouquets. “I am delighted to have taken part in the elections,” he explains in his first post-election speech and recalls that “Germany has become an anchor of hope for many people in the world in turbulent times.” But Germans must never forget: "If we want to inspire others, then we need courage to preserve what we have: freedom and democracy."
