The European Parliament has rejected a reduction in the number of carbon dioxide quotas available on the market.
Axel Eggert, CEO of Eurofer, said before the European Parliament vote on the rate of CO2 emissions reductions: “More than ever, we need a good business environment today and the EU ETS must take into account our needs.”
The European Iron and Steel Association (Eurofer) recalls that the European steel sector has not yet managed to overcome the economic problems that it had to solve in recent times. Although the demand for steel in the European Union is growing, this growth is fully met by products imported from outside the EU.
Eurofer says it supports changes to the EU ETS, but requires a look at the environmental benefits of using metallurgical waste gases for power generation and other details such as a flat rate benchmark or indirect cost issues. According to Eurofer, these issues should be finalized at subsequent stages of the legislative process.
