Metinvest announces recovery of steel production in 2016

Metinvest Ukraine Group, which is a holding company based on mining and metallurgical assets, announced productivity growth in 2016, including at the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, Azovstal.

The total production of pig iron was 8.82 million tons, an increase of 9.6% compared to 2015. At the same time, the company's steel production increased by 9% compared to 2015, to 8.393 million tons.

The group explains the increase in pig iron production by a partial recovery in production at metallurgical plants after its decline in the first half of 2015 due to the active phase of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has continued since the second half of 2014.

“In particular, due to the conflict in the first quarter of 2015, Yeniy Iron and Steel Works was completely stopped from February 7 to March 16, 2015, and the supply of raw materials to Azovstal and MMKI was limited. tons, at Azovstal - 352 thousand tons, at EMZ - 178 thousand tons, "the company notes.

In particular, the metallurgical plant Azovstal last year increased the production of pig iron by 12%, to 3.177 million tons, the Mariupol iron and steel works named after Ilyich - by 7%, to 3.818 million tons, and Yenakiyevo Metallurgical Plant - by 11%, to 1,826 million tons.

The company notes that the increase in pig iron production has led to an increase in steel production. In 2016, steel production amounted to 8393 thousand tons, which is 9% more than last year. Thus, the increase in steel production at MMKI amounted to 91 thousand tonnes, at Azovstal - 499 thousand tonnes, and at EMZ - 134 thousand tonnes.
