In January 2017, steel production in India increased by 12% to 8.4 million tonnes compared to the same period in 2016, when the country's steel output was 7.5 million tonnes.
This is well above the 7% growth in total global steel production, which stood at 136.5 million tonnes in January 2017.
China's production accounts for half of the world's steel output, and its steel production rose 7.4% to 67.2 million tonnes over the same period last year.
