As a result of government measures, about 500 thousand people will lose their jobs in the metallurgical and mining industries this year. This is part of Beijing's struggle with overcapacity in energy-intensive sectors of the economy.
Their plans were announced at the Chinese Ministry of Labor. Beijing wants to cut jobs in these industries. Last year, according to official figures, China closed 726,000 jobs in both industries.
The government is willing to encourage employees to move from mines and smelters after retraining to new jobs, retirement, or support in starting their own business.
In many regions of China, coal and steel production is the main industry and there is no other alternative. But the problem of overproduction of certain types of raw materials in the most populous country in the world must be resolved by the government in connection with plans to move away from the model of energy-intensive industries. This, in turn, could mean a decrease in demand for coal and steel.
