Vale says a combination of factors led to the decision to close the Stobury mine in Sudbury, Ontario, including metal prices, mining inefficiencies, and recent seismic activity that has kept workers from sinking lower to mine.
After 100 years of operation, the mine has come to the end of its natural life. Low-grade nickel ore at Stoby is no longer economical in today's challenging pricing environment.
In addition, in 2013, Vale of Brazil received a record $ 1.05 million in fines for the Stobie crash that claimed the lives of two young men. The workers were buried in a stream of wet mud and ore on June 8, 2011.
