The South Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has built the world's largest container ship with a capacity of 20,150 TEU. This is the first of a series of four vessels ordered in February 2015 by Japanese shipowner MOL (Mitsui OSK Lines), which has the tenth largest fleet.
The MOL Triumph container ship is 400 m long, 58.8 m wide and 16 m high. The ship is equipped with an energy efficient SHI drive and is currently undergoing sea trials before being shipped to the shipowner.
Until now, the largest container class is Barzan (built in 2015 for the United Arab Emirates Shipping Company) and can carry 19,870 20-foot containers. If they are placed one behind the other, then they form a row more than 121 km long.
Recently, there has been a trend towards an increase in container ships, which is associated with a decrease in the cost of transporting 1 TEU, namely, an increase in the company's efficiency. The problem, however, is the maximum filling of the vessel during each voyage.
