Italians have come to an agreement with Gazprom

Russian gas company Gazprom and Italian energy company Eni signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Russian gas supplies to Italy. The southern corridor is very important for Moscow, as this can prove the need to build a new supply route bypassing Ukraine.

According to Gazprom head Alexei Miller, Italian companies are interested in delivering Russian gas to the south of the country, because most of the raw materials are now going to the north. One of the ways to solve this problem could be the creation of another Turkish Stream pipeline. Gas in the amount of about 15.75 billion cubic meters will be additionally supplied to the territory of Turkey, Greece and from there, using a combination of Poseidon gas to Italy.

As a result, Gazprom could strengthen its position in the Italian market, given that Germany, Italy and Turkey are the third largest customers for Russian gas. In addition, they provide a strong argument in Russia's plans to expand the gas pipeline from Russia through Turkey to the south of the European Union.

Until now, European analysts have criticized these plans, they believe that Russia wants to supply gas to the south bypassing Ukraine and will invest billions of euros in a project that could be economically questionable. However, thanks to an agreement with Eni, Gazprom could reject these claims, arguing that demand for Russian gas in southern Europe is growing.
