Braidy Industries, a US-based Delaware-based holding company, has announced a $ 1.3 billion investment to build an aluminum smelter on the south coast in Greenup, Kentucky. The fully integrated aluminum rolling mill is expected to be the most technically advanced production facility in the United States.
Construction of the plant is slated to begin in early 2018, and the company hopes to be completed by 2020 and create about 1,000 temporary jobs in the region.
Upon commissioning, the plant is expected to employ 550 workers. The new facility will have the capacity to produce around 370,000 tonnes of aluminum per year, which will be mainly supplied to the automotive and aerospace industries. The production will mainly focus on the 5000, 6000 and 7000 series of aluminum sheets and plates.
According to Governor Bevin, the decision to establish a plant in the state is one of the most significant economic transactions in Kentucky history. The investment will create tremendous opportunities for people in the region, he said.
