Turkey's crude steel production increased sharply in the first quarter of this year, reaching 8.8 million tonnes, according to the World Steel Association. Production volume increased 14.1 percent year on year in the first three months of 2017. Turkey retained its position as the eighth largest steel producer in the world from 67 countries, accounting for about 2.13 percent of global production.
Veysel Yayan, general secretary of the iron and steel industry association, said that if growth continues in the coming months, the country's crude steel production will reach 35.2 million tonnes per year. He said the increase in output was due to an increase in exports, despite a 10 percent decrease in domestic consumption.
In the first quarter of 2017, Turkey's steel exports grew 20 percent year-on-year to 5.2 million tonnes, while in dollar terms it increased 33.3 percent year-on-year to $ 3.4 billion. volume by about 21 percent or 4 million tons in the same period.
Global crude steel production rose 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year to 410.5 million tonnes, according to the association.
China retained its position as the world's largest producer of crude steel with 201.1 million tonnes - nearly half of total global production - in the same period, while Turkey was among the top 10 countries to increase steel production in the largest degree.
