South Korea will halt operations at eight of the country's old coal-fired power plants during June as part of air pollution control measures, the Ministry of Energy said.
South Korea's new president, Moon Jae, earlier this month announced plans to temporarily close operations at 10 coal-fired power plants that have been in operation for more than 30 years, and to push them for permanent closures during his presidential term, which ends in May 2022.
The energy minister said in a statement that eight of the 10 old coal-fired power plants will be temporarily closed from June 1 for one month, while the other two will remain operational to ensure a stable power supply.
Starting next year, facilities will be closed regularly for four months and operations will be closed on a permanent basis until 2022, three years earlier than previously planned.
Coal-fired power plants currently supply about 40 percent of South Korea's total electricity needs.
The country operates a total of 59 coal-fired power plants and accounts for 10 older power plants at 10.6 percent of the installed capacity of coal-fired power plants, or 3.3 gigawatts.
