The European Commission on Friday imposed duties on the import of steel reinforcement from Belarus, which, in its opinion, was sold on the European market at dumping prices.
According to the EU decision, the imposed import duties over the next five years will protect European producers from unfair competition from Belarus. A Commission investigation found that rebar from that country was sold to the EU at 58 percent below market prices.
The investigation into this case was opened in March 2016. Since December last year, the European Commission has temporarily applied customs duties to Belarusian imports, which were supposed to protect European manufacturers of valves.
“The EU is using all possible legal means to ensure fair trade in the European steel industry, given the global overcapacity in the sector,” the Commission said.
