World crude steel production from 67 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) in May 2017 was up 2.0% from May 2016, reaching 143.3 million tonnes.
Steel production in China in May 2017 was 72.3 million tonnes, increasing output by 1.8% compared to May 2016. Japan produced 9.0 million tonnes of crude steel in May 2017, an increase of only 0.1% compared to May 2016.
In the EU region, Germany produced 3.8 million tonnes of steel in May 2017, a decrease of 1.4% compared to May 2016. Italy produced 2.1 million tonnes of steel, down 4.1% from May 2016. France produced 1.4 million tonnes of steel, up 21.5% from May 2016. Spain produced 1.2 million tonnes, down 3.7% from May 2016.
Turkey's crude steel production in May 2017 was 3.3 million tonnes, up 9.7% from May 2016.
The United States produced 7.0 million tonnes of steel in May 2017, increasing output by 0.2% over May 2016.
The power utilization factor of 67 countries in May 2017 was 71.8%. This is 0.5 percentage points higher than in May 2016, and compared to April 2017, this is 1.8 percentage points lower.
