India has already overtaken the United States to become the world's third-largest steel producer, and the country is now trying to oust Japan from the second place.
In July this year, India's crude steel production rose 3.5% to 8.36 million tonnes, according to the latest report from the World Steel Association. in the same month last year, steel production amounted to 8.08 tons.
Domestic production for January-July 2017 increased by 5.4% to 58.01 million tons compared to 55.07 million tons in the same period in 2016.
World steel production for 67 countries representing the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 143.24 million tonnes in July this year, registering an increase of 6.3% from 134.798 million tonnes in July 2016.
In the first seven months of 2017, global steel production was 977.32 million tonnes, up 4.6 percent from 933.97 million tonnes in the same period in 2016.
The world's largest steel producer China produced 74.021 million tonnes, up 10.3 percent from last year when the country produced 67.12 million tonnes.
Japan has seen a decline in steel production. The second-largest production country smelted 8.588 million tons of steel, up 4.3 percent from 8.971 million tons a year earlier.
