Hurricane Irma sweeps along the west coast of Florida and now descends into the city of Tampa. Irma has now landed on Marco Island from the west coast of Florida with winds of up to 120 mph (192 km /h), but has since been downgraded from category three to two.
More than 3.4 million homes in the state are without electricity, and parts of Miami are under water. On Monday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that "the action continues across parts of Florida's central peninsula."
Irma currently has maximum sustained winds of 160 km /h, with a gust of up to 200 km /h recorded at Clearwater Beach and one even stronger recorded in the Egmont Channel. Irma has already devastated the Caribbean coastline, with the result that about 6.3 million people in Florida have been evacuated.
President Donald Trump has approved a major natural disaster declaration and emergency federal aid for Florida. He described the hurricane as a "great monster", praising the federal agencies involved in the storm.
“We might be lucky that he went west and it may not have been as devastating, but we'll see it continue for the next five or six hours,” Trump added.
