Gas transmission from Russia to Europe using the Ukrainian gas transmission system increased by 20 percent. Moreover, this year promises to be the best for Kiev for more than five years.
Last week, the Russian gas giant transported 315 million cubic meters of gas daily through Ukraine. Ukrainian gas company Naftogaz noted that the use of the local transmission system is currently just over 75 percent. However, Russia wants to reduce the use of the Ukrainian system, among other things, by building the Nord Stream gas pipeline and planning the construction of Nord Stream 2.
However, Nord Stream 2, which is critical for deliveries across the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, is currently pending, which will continue until at least September 22nd. And maybe even longer. This means the need to use the Ukrainian system.
According to the operator of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, gas transit to Europe through Ukraine in January-August increased by 23.4 percent compared to the same period last year - to 61.95 billion cubic meters. This is the highest value in six years. However, as Alexey Miller, head of Gazprom, recently said, the state of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, due to underfunding, cannot guarantee a reliable supply of European consumers.
Russia remains dependent on the Ukrainian gas transmission system
