India will reach more than 50 percent of its 300 million tonne steel target by 2018, Seoul Metallurgy Minister Chaudhary Birander Singh said. He also assured stakeholders that there would be no shortage of raw materials for steel production. “In the 2018-19 financial year, the volume of steel production will be 170 million tons,” the minister said.
In line with the NSP National Steel Policy, the government has set a production target of 300 tonnes to be achieved by 2030-31. The NSP also aims to more than double per capita steel consumption to 158 kg by 2030-31 from 61 kg currently.
The minister asked the industry to make full use of the resources available in the country. India is overpowered and iron ore reserves will continue to be exploited for at least the next 30 years, he said. These measures are expected to reduce dependence on imports of raw materials such as coking coal from countries including Australia.
According to official data, at the end of 2016, domestic crude steel production was close to 100 million tonnes.
