Zaporizhstal General Director Rostislav Shurma: Science in metallurgy needs to be given a new impetus

On October 2-3, 2017, the International Metallurgical Forum "Science and Innovation" is being held in Kiev. The forum was organized by Metinvest Group together with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Smart-Holding. The forum was attended by the metallurgical companies Interpipe, ArcelorMittal, representatives of the Technical University of the Freiberg Mining Academy (Germany), the National University "Lviv Polytechnic", the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine, etc.

More than 200 representatives of Ukrainian and foreign enterprises of the mining and metallurgical complex, scientific institutes of Ukraine and European countries, representatives of state authorities take part in the work of the forum "Science and Innovations". On the first day of the forum, October 2, the participants discussed the development strategy of the mining and metallurgical complex, existing problems and innovative ways to solve them, the issue of high-quality personnel training for dynamically developing enterprises.

The forum paid special attention to the issues of ecology and ecological modernization of production facilities. Rostislav Shurma, General Director of the Zaporizhstal Mill, presented the report "Environmental Efficiency is the Obligation of Every Modern Business" on the program of the plant's ecological modernization over the past 5 years. Since 2012, the Zaporizhstal Combine has completely reconstructed the gas cleaning systems of sintering machines, overhauled blast furnaces No. 2, 4 and 5 and their aspiration systems, reconstructed blast furnace No. 3, put into operation a new ecological line for hydrochloric acid pickling in the cold rolling shop No. one.

The experience of eco-modernization of blast-furnace production of Zaporizhstal aroused particular interest of the participants, since during the reconstruction of BF # 3 the enterprise applied a set of innovative solutions, unique for Ukraine. The creation of an intelligent model of the blast furnace, the use of laser scanning technology for segments and SKD assembly of the unit allowed reducing the project implementation time from 2 years to 8 months. The new furnace is equipped with the most modern aspiration systems, which allows achieving dust removal parameters of up to 20 mg per cubic meter.

“Since 2012, Zaporizhstal has allocated more than UAH 8.5 billion for eco-modernization. The plant has become the most invested facility in Ukraine. We are faced with the task of large-scale reconstruction of steelmaking production. The realities of the market made their own adjustments to the project for the construction of the oxygen-converter shop, but did not in any way affect our decision to reconstruct the steelmaking process, ”stressed Rostislav Shurma.
