World steel production reached 1,691.2 million tonnes in 2017, up 5.3% from 2016. Steel output increased in all regions in 2017, with the exception of the CIS, where production remained unchanged.
Annual production in Asia was 1,162.5 million tonnes of steel in 2017, an increase of 5.4% over 2016. Steel production in China in 2017 amounted to 831.7 million tons, which is 5.7% more than in 2016. China's share in global steel production increased from 49.0% in 2016 to 49.2% in 2017. In 2017, Japan produced 104.7 million tons, which is 0.1% less than in 2016. India's production in 2017 was 101.4 million tonnes, up 6.2% from 2016. South Korea produced 71.1 million tonnes of steel in 2017, an increase of 3.7% over 2016.
Steel production in 2017 in the CIS, according to available data, amounted to 102.1 million tons, the same amount as in 2016. Russia produced 71.3 million tonnes of crude steel in 2017, up 1.3% in 2016. In Ukraine, a decline was recorded - 6.4% with an annual rate of 22.7 million tons.
In 2017, the EU (28) produced 168.7 million tonnes of steel, an increase of 4.1% compared to 2016. Germany increased by 3.5 percent, to 43.56 million tons. Italy in 2017 produced 24.0 million tons, which is 2.9% more than in 2016. Spain produced 14.5 million tonnes of steel in 2017, an increase of 6.2% over 2016.
In Turkey, the increase in smelting is thirteen percent (up to 37.524 million tons). And in Iran it even reached 21.4 percent (production - 21.726 million tons). Egypt produced 6.8 million tonnes, up 35%.
In the United States, growth is 4 percent to 81.6 million tons. Growth in Canada (8.3 percent) and Mexico (6.3 percent) led the entire continent of North America to increase steel output by 4.8 percent.
