In November, the European Commission presented a proposal to amend the EU gas directive, which should clearly state that subsea gas pipelines in the EU are subject to the so-called third energy package. This initiative could jeopardize the profitability of the Nord Stream 2 project.
Some EU members hope that the amendments to the norms will be quickly adopted by the EU countries and the European Parliament.
The balance of power in the European Council does not offer any decisive advantage or protection of the amendment to the gas directive, such as Poland and 9 countries, or its opponents, including Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
“We do not hide that we count on the US support for the efforts of various EU countries, including Poland, to hinder the construction of Nord Stream 2,” Minister of Investment and Development Jerzy Kwiecinski said on Sunday.
“This is not another branch of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. This is an attempt to add (gas) to Europe from Russia, and also to monopolize the direction of gas supplies through Germany. This is dangerous for many countries, ”Kwieczyński said in an interview with Polish Radio 24.
The US can indirectly influence the decisions of some EU countries in geopolitical issues
