In 2017, the production of the mining and metallurgical complex was one of the lowest in the history of independent Ukraine. Steel production and rolled metal exports fell to historic lows. However, due to the rise in prices, the complex retained almost a third in the structure of Ukrainian exports, even slightly increasing its share.
Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises last year smelted only 21.3 million tons of steel, which is 12% less than in 2016. This is the lowest figure in recent decades. Least of all Ukrainian enterprises smelted steel in 1994-1995 - 22 million tons. This was the worst period in the history of Ukraine's independence.
However, if we take only enterprises in the controlled territory, then they produced 20.91 million tons of steel, this is even plus 0.1% by 2016.
Ukrainian metallurgy is highly dependent on exports, with 43% of the total volume of semi-finished and low value added goods. In 2017, Ukrainian metallurgists exported 14.6 million tons of rolled metal, which is 18.6% less than in 2016, when 17.7 million tons were exported. Since prices for rolled metal products have increased, in value terms, an increase of 29% was noted, to $ 7.2 billion.
