World stainless steel production increased by about 5 percent over the past year. Growth has slowed in Europe. The good economic situation also reflects improved performance by the largest producers.
Further increases in production and consumption are expected this year. Some companies are also announcing price increases. According to MEPS International, worldwide stainless steel production will increase by another 5 percent this year. In the European Union, production will increase by 150,000 tons. India and Indonesia are likely to achieve the greatest momentum when new production capacities become operational, resulting in one-fifth of their production being affected. Last year, these countries grew by about 12 percent.
