The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) of Ukraine announced that it wants to meet with US Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch and hold talks on removing Ukrainian metal products from the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which the administration of President Donald Trump imposed on March 23.
Ukrainian industrial associations have already said that American duties could hurt the Ukrainian budget. This will happen, among other things, as a result of the reaction of the European Union, which has already begun an investigation into the introduction of similar duties, and these measures for Ukraine may become even more painful than the actions of the United States.
“To the United States of America, we supply metal products (which came under duties - ed.) For about $ 150 million, we supply such products for $ 1.3 billion to the European Union,” said Oleksandr Kalenkov, President of the Ukrmetallurgprom enterprises. ...
The consequence of the reduction in exports to the United States and the European Union will be massive cuts at metallurgical plants in Ukraine, experts say. According to the most conservative estimates, metallurgical plants will have to cut from 25 to 30 thousand jobs. In addition, the volume of transportation by rail, the turnover of goods in ports, etc. will drop.
