Seoul is exploring this possibility. South Korea does not exclude the construction of a gas pipeline through which Russian raw materials could be imported.
As the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea Kang Chun-Hwa admitted, if the security situation on the Korean Peninsula improves, there will indeed be the possibility of building a gas pipeline.
Analysts believe that North Koreans will also be interested in investment. The gas pipeline would have to pass through their territory. The DPRK has few fuel resources; the gas pipeline can improve the energy balance. In exchange for consent to transit, North Korea, naturally, could receive gas.
It is important to note that the gas pipeline can be positioned so that it does not pass through the territory of China. Such a decision would mean strengthening the DPRK's position in negotiations with Beijing.
South Korea is one of the largest LNG consumers in the world. It consumes more than 35 million tons of raw materials annually. For economic reasons, Seoul would like to import gas through pipelines. And its only potential supplier is Russia.
Delivery from Russia to Korea will allow diversifying consumers. At the moment, Russia is highly dependent on European gas consumers.
