China's Ministry of Commerce said on Monday that it has launched an anti-dumping investigation into the import of stainless steel billets and hot rolled stainless steel sheets sourced from Europe, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia.
The move follows a complaint by Shanxi Taigang of stainless steel with support from four other factories, including the stainless steel maker Baosteel, the report said.
China imported 703,000 tons of these products in 2017, up nearly 200 percent from a year earlier, with 98 percent coming from the regions under investigation.
The rapid increase in imports has caused real damage to the Chinese market, according to a complaint filed by Shanxi Taigan Company and published with a Commerce Department document.
Shanxi Taigan accounts for 25-35 percent of China's stainless steel production.
