In June of this year, the production of Asian crude steel was 107.378 million tons, which is significantly higher by 6.9% compared with the volume of production in the same period last year. In June 2017, regional production totaled only 100.458 million tonnes. Total production in the first six months of this year increased by 5.2% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 613.910 million tons.
The leading manufacturer, China, reported a 7.5% increase in production. During the month, the country accounted for almost 75% of the total regional production. Chinese output amounted to 80.196 million tons. Japan was the second largest steel producer in the region, pushing India into third place by a narrow margin. Japanese production totaled 8.760 million tons, while India produced 8.739 million tons of steel in June this year. The top three manufacturers accounted for over 90% of the Asia region's total monthly production.
Steel production in June 2008 by other countries was: South Korea (6.122 million tons), Taiwan (1.660 million tons), Vietnam (1.252 million tons), Pakistan (360,000 tons) and Thailand (290,000 tons). Taiwan and Thailand were the only countries in the region to report a decrease in monthly production, with production falling 8.6% and 15.9% respectively from the previous year. The Vietnamese issue recorded a sharp jump of 42.3%.
