India's Commerce Department is considering postponing the implementation of reciprocal US import tariffs and paving the way for a favorable 2 + 2 bilateral dialogue in September and exemption from US tariffs on Indian steel and aluminum.
A reliable source told DNA Money that Washington has asked New Delhi to postpone the implementation of the reciprocal tariffs for further negotiations on whether India can be excluded from the US tariff on aluminum and steel.
He said Washington is seriously considering India's request for exemption from restrictive tariffs on two metals. Australia, South Korea, Latin America and other countries are already taking advantage of the duty to stop exporting steel and aluminum to the United States.
The reciprocal duties of $ 241 million on 29 US imports, announced in June, were expected to take effect Saturday. “The Minister of Trade is inclined to postpone the date of the implementation of the reciprocal tariff. It will also help move towards a more supportive atmosphere for the meeting (2 + 2), ”a source said on condition of anonymity.
India's contract for a US decision to collect 25% and 10% duty on Indian steel and aluminum, respectively, nearly thwarted proposed 2 + 2 discussions between the two countries when the US canceled it. It is expected to take place next month.
