Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in Germany on August 18 for talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel on the war in Syria, the situation in eastern Ukraine and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, said German government spokesman Steffen Seiber.
Putin's previous meeting with Merkel took place in May 2018 in Sochi. In July, in Berlin, Sergei Lavrov met with Chancellor Merkel and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
Nord Stream 2 is a 1200 km gas pipeline project across the Baltic Sea from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald in Germany. The pipeline should be ready by the end of 2019, as Russia intends to significantly reduce the transmission of gas through pipelines passing through Ukraine next year. Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine are opposed to this project.
Nord Stream 2 will run in parallel with the Nord Stream gas pipeline launched in 2011. Russian Gazprom's partners in this project are Western energy companies: Austrian OMV, German BASF-Wintershall and Uniper, French Engie and British-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell.
Russian Gazprom reports that after the construction of Nord Stream 2, transit through Ukraine can be maintained "on a certain scale."
