During a meeting in Meseberg in Brandenburg, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin also discussed the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
At this meeting, such large joint projects as Nord Stream 2 were discussed, ”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday evening.
He added that Merkel and Putin had negatively assessed attempts to politicize the project, and they stressed that it should be completed.
Peskov said Merkel and Putin also discussed possible US sanctions against companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 project.
The US has a sanctions package that could be used to try to stop the construction of the Russian-German Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea, according to the Wall Street Journal.
In an effort to soften international criticism of Nord Stream 2, Germany is demanding that Ukraine continue to make money by sending its gas through its territory.
Angela Merkel's meeting with Vladimir Putin in Meseberg lasted more than 3 hours. The Russian President came to Germany from Austria, where he was one of the guests invited to the wedding of the Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneisl. After meeting with the German Chancellor, Putin flew to Russia.
