The latest statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) show that in January this year, compared with the previous year, the volume of supplies of steel from the US steel mills increased markedly. However, shipments have slightly decreased compared to the previous month.
AISI reported that rolled steel shipments totaled 7.911 million tonnes in July 2018, down slightly 1% from 7.988 million tonnes delivered in the previous month. Shipments recorded a 5.8% surge over the previous year. In July 2017, US steel mills shipped just 7.480 million tonnes.
Several products reported sharp declines in July-July shipments from the previous month. Compared to June this year, the supply of galvanized sheet and strip decreased by 4%. Hot-rolled sheet shipments also declined by 3%, while cold-rolled sheet shipments remained unchanged.
Cumulative shipments from US steel mills in the first seven months of this year were 55.215 million net tonnes, up 4.3% from shipments in the corresponding seven-month period in 2017. Shipments of steel products to the United States totaled only 52.939 million tons in January-July 2017.
At the same time, US steel production in the week ended September 8, 2018 saw a jump of 9.8% over the same period in 2017. Capacity utilization increased from 73.4% to 80.2% during the year.
