Imports of rolled metal products to the United States declined during August this year. This is based on preliminary data released by the US Bureau of Statistics.
According to the data, the US imported a total of 2,965,818 tonnes of steel in August this year, slightly less than 2,899,654 tonnes in the previous month. Over the past year, imports of finished steel products fell sharply by 10.4% from 26.613 million tons in January-August 2017 to 23.839 million tons.
In August of this year, finished steel products with a record increase in imports are wire rods, imports of which increased by almost 30%. Other products experiencing a notable jump in imports were ingots, billets and slabs.
The largest exporter of finished metal products to the United States in August 18th was South Korea. Imports from this country amounted to 169,000 tons. Turkey was in second place with 119,000 tons, followed by Japan with 101,000 tons.
