The new security measures will cover seven types of imported metal products.
The Canadian government has announced its decision to impose a 25% tariff and quotas on steel imports from selected countries, including China and Turkey, in an attempt to limit the flow of steel imports. Specific exemptions will be provided for the United States, Mexico and developing countries.
At the same time, the administration also decided to issue refunds on import tariffs paid on steel and aluminum products imported from the United States, which are found to be in short supply in the country.
The new security measures will cover seven types of imported metal products. The tariff will affect imports of heavy plate, reinforced concrete rebar, energy tubular products, hot rolled plate, pre-painted steel, stainless steel wire and wire rod. The announced rates are preliminary and will come into effect on October 25, 2018 within 200 days. A request from the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) will decide whether to extend the proposed tariffs for a period of three years.
