POSCO produces 700mm slabs with the "PosMC Machine" developed by the Korean giant in June this year. Slabs are semi-finished rectangular products used as material for hot rolled steel sheets or heavy sheets. It is believed that the thicker the slab, the more difficult it is to manufacture. The 700mm slab can be used to produce heavy slabs up to 233mm thick. Currently, European and Japanese metallurgical companies can produce plates up to 600 mm thick.
“POSCO started developing the PosMC Machine in 2008 and successfully developed it based on proprietary technology,” said O-Kyung-sik, POS MC Technology Team Leader at POSCO. "Its development cost was only one fifth of our competitors."
The thickest slab in the world is the heaviest. It weighs 1 ton by 1 centimeter. POSCO produces about 400 tons of 700 mm slabs daily. They are mainly used for ships, but considering that 1 ton of steel goes into one car, this means that the steelmaker produces 400 cars a day.
POSCO is already recognized for technological excellence by its corporate clients who want to use the best steel products in the world. He supplied steel products for the Canakkale 1915 Grand Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, and worked with Volvo, which is renowned for its safe vehicles. POSCO recently surpassed one million tons of cumulative heavy plate sales for the world's leading wind power producer.
POSCO has been named the world's most competitive steel company by WSD, which has specialized in steel industry analysis for nine consecutive years since 2010. POSCO expects full-scale commercial production of 700mm slabs to accelerate its movement towards the world's best steel company.
