Luxembourg unions LCGB have issued a press release to express their concerns about the future of ArcelorMittal Dudelange. The plant is currently being sold along with a number of lines controlled by the group in Liege, Belgium.
In a statement, the unions confirmed that there are rumors of Liberty House's interest in acquiring the Luxembourg site. However, they also explained that they believed the sale of Liberty would jeopardize the future of Dudelange's workforce, as Liberty is seen as primarily interested in the financial aspect of the acquisition rather than its industrial value.
Last month, Liberty House agreed to acquire a number of steel and rolling assets in Romania, the Czech Republic, Macedonia and Italy from ArcelorMittal, making Liberty a leading player in the European steel market.
“Today LCGB is again calling on national politicians as well as ArcelorMittal executives not to prioritize a possible acquisition path by a purely financial player,” the union said in a statement.
As reported, other stakeholders in the Luxembourg and Belgium assets are considered Salzgitter, NLMK Europe and SSAB are expected to announce the sale agreement before the end of the year. LCGB notes in its release that the sale will be welcomed if business continuity is ensured. ”
