Steel production in the CIS fell by 2.6%

The monthly steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) show a 2.6% drop in production in the CIS region in September this year. Another part of Europe was another region that reported production cuts. It should be noted that global production grew by 4.4% over the previous year.

In September 2018, the CIS region produced 8.187 million tonnes of steel, up from 8.611 million tonnes in September last year. Production margins in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have not been able to offset sharp declines in production in other countries in the region, including Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.

Russia, the leading CIS producing country, recorded a 1.3% decline in production to 5.910 million tonnes, which is more than 70% of the total regional production. Ukraine continued to be the second largest steel producer in the region. Ukrainian production dropped significantly by 7.6% to 1.787 million tonnes. In third place was Kazakhstan with a total volume of 365 thousand tons.

Cumulative steel production in the region in January-September 18 increased slightly by 1.8% and amounted to 76.221 million tons. Production was only 74.905 million tonnes during the corresponding nine-month period in 2017.
